Jones Beach Show Review

Metal Masters
fuseblog

Mark and I had the opportunity to see and hear some true metal at its finest when the Metal Masters Tour plowed through the Jones Beach amphitheater in Long Island, New York.  Judas Priest, Heaven and Hell, Motorhead, and Testament:  I felt like I was back in high school.

By the time we arrived, Testament had already begun their set, but we were still lucky enough to hear Chuck Billy and company tear through a few classics.  Next up was Motorhead.  When Lemmy shouted, “We’re Motorhead, and we play rock ‘n’ roll,” I remembered how cool it was when Overkill’s Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth introduced our Talking Metal jam of the Motorhead classic, “Overkill,” by saying, “We’re Turtlehead, and we play rock ‘n’ roll!” Mike Portnoy made up the name!

When Heaven and Hell took the stage, I was once again in awe, as we were literally four rows in front of the living legend, Tony Iommi.  Dio was also spot on as usual.  In a live setting, he consistently sounds just as good or better than he does in the studio.  Amazing!

We also had the pleasure of interviewing Judas Priest’s Glenn Tipton for before their set.  The interview will soon be available on the Talking Metal podcast.  The group opening up with new track “Prophecy,” and for the first few minutes of the track, Rob Halford was covered by a silver hooded cape.  It reminded me of my Ostronomy costume!  More on Judas Priest later, but the more I listen to Halford, the more I think he’s the greatest singer in metal.
